The Green Vantage

Biophilic Modern

Devanahalli, Bengaluru2024

The Green Vantage sits on a half-acre plot north of Bengaluru, designed from the outset as a place to decompress. The clients wanted the outdoors to feel like a continuation of the interior — never separate from it.

Renova Studio structured the home around three biophilic principles: direct nature contact (indoor planting walls, a living moss installation in the dining room), indirect nature (natural material textures, dappled light through timber screens) and restorative spatial refuges (a reading alcove, a shaded veranda, a sunken lounge pit).

The palette is deliberately quiet: off-white lime plaster, pale green linen, reclaimed Burma teak, and unlacquered copper fixtures that patina gently. Every finish was sourced within 400 km of the site to minimise environmental impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is biophilic design and how does it work in a home?

Biophilic design integrates nature into built spaces — through living plants, natural materials, water features, and spatial arrangements that echo natural environments. Research shows it significantly reduces stress and improves wellbeing, making it especially valuable in weekend retreats.

How do you maintain a living wall in a private home?

We specify plant species suited to the light levels and humidity of each specific wall, and install an automated drip-irrigation and fertilisation system. We also provide the homeowners with a quarterly maintenance guide and can arrange periodic checks through a partner horticulturist.

Was the reclaimed Burma teak sourced sustainably?

Yes — all reclaimed teak used in this project comes from decommissioned structures and is certified accordingly. Using reclaimed timber reduces demand for new forest harvesting and adds genuine character that new wood cannot match.

Can a biophilic home be designed on a typical villa budget?

Biophilic design does not require rare finishes — local stone, natural plasters, and climate-appropriate planting are often more affordable than imported luxury materials. The investment is in the considered integration of nature into the architecture, which is a design decision rather than a materials cost.
